You’ve Gotta Give to Get

SamSpeaks! Gotta Give BlogI’m a big fan of giving back and forming long-term relationships. In business – and life – you absolutely have to give to get. Whether you think of it as The Golden Rule, Karma or just being a good person, what you put out there comes back to you. Here are some ways helping others can help you be successful in business.

Work, Work, Work, Work, Work
This may sound simple, but treating a client with respect and catering to their needs will go a long way… and it’s what you should be doing anyway. Sometimes, especially when starting out, this may mean you have to put in a lot of hard work in what might feel like very trivial areas, including doing a lot of research and helping with small deals. You have to put in the work to establish yourself. If and when you do, the hard work will pay off with the relationships you’ve established. Deals will get bigger and bigger if you stay committed and true to your clients. Tip: Don’t be afraid to take on small deals, and hustle like nobody’s business.

Support Your Community
If you support your community, your community will support you. There are many options, such as sponsoring local events, giving a portion of your commission check to charity or giving your time by serving on a charity or community board. With all of these options, you have to do what makes the most sense for you. Be strategic – maybe you are looking for exposure, or contacts, or just to help a group that has a mission that is important to you. Your good deeds will come back to you when people know about your commitment to helping others. Tip: Get involved with an organization that can help you make contacts with prospective clients.

Share Your Knowledge
Don’t be a knowledge hoarder and keep it all to yourself. Another way to really help people is to give them information that will make their real estate journey easier and smoother.  You don’t have to work for hours on end for free, but be willing to answer questions within reason. Another way you can educate people is through methods such as blogging, guest speaking and sharing real estate resources and informative articles. At one time, I even taught a college class, which was a great opportunity for me to share my expertise. Tip: Find a way to share your knowledge with others, such as blogging or speaking to groups.

Anne Frank once said, “No one has ever become poor by giving,” and it’s true! Helping others can really help your bottom line.
