The real estate business can be complicated. So much of our success depends on personal relationships, reputation and trust. With that in mind – working with friends can be a no-brainer. So, what’s so different about working with friends? Is it okay to mix business with pleasure?
Deal or No Deal… Why work with your friends?
When you’re getting started in any business, prospective clients don’t just beat down a path to your door – you have to go for it, build up your reputation and your book of business. I say – who better to work with than friends and family, the people who already know you and what you can accomplish? If this sounds a little scary at first for those of us who have heard a million times not to mix business with pleasure, don’t let it! If you’re not reaching out to friends and family, you might be missing out. Not only that, you are missing out on the people from their networks they will refer you to. Tip: Friends and family members can be your first clients. Do right by them and ask them for referrals.
Get on Your Game
Treat friends and family members like you would any other clients – hustle your ass off on their behalf! They want to sell their home in record time? Get that thing on the market and hustle. Just because you have a personal relationship with someone, doesn’t mean you can use it as an excuse to slack. In fact, work even harder for them and watch the magic happen. Sometimes, it’s all about education and sharing your knowledge of the market. Let your loved ones know about your profession, your passion for real estate and your experience. Market to them and demonstrate your dedication so they think of you first when they need an agent. Tip: Share useful information about the real estate market on social media and remind your friends and family that you are in the business.
Take it to the Next Level
When you know you’re the best, you won’t let your friends and family go to anyone else. There should already be a level of trust because they know you. Build on that trust by doing an incredible job for your client, who just happens to be someone you already care for. Think of this as giving them an incredible gift. What can be better than helping them make money, secure their future or become more stable and happy? Those are all things that can happen through a real estate transaction with the right agent. Tip: With friends and family, and ALL of your clients, go the extra mile and get them “that little extra something” in the negotiation that will help improve their lifestyle.
Whether you’re a brand new agent, or in the business for decades, not working with friends and family is like leaving money on the table. Be confident in your abilities and help your loved ones improve their lives through a great real estate deal.
