If you’ve been following my story and sharing in the SamSpeaks! series, you know that real estate wasn’t my first career. Growing up, I’ve had a number of jobs–mainly in the hospitality industry. Making a transition into an entirely new industry is never easy, but if you can figure out a way to correlate the two and offer something fresh and new into an industry, you will be able to set yourself apart and grow in a different direction.
I’m always curious in learning people’s story as it’s interesting to see how their past helped them evolve into their current and future success. Like me, Josh Tucker wasn’t always a real estate agent either. In this episode of SamSpeaks!, Josh talked with me about his decade long career with NASCAR. That’s right — Josh was one of those crazy guys in the pit that jumps off a wall when a racecar comes screaming in at 70 miles per hour. He traveled the country and spent 40 weekends a year in hotels. Sounds glamorous? Not so much.
After a hectic schedule in the fastlane, it’s no wonder he was ready for a change. So I wanted to know, why did Josh choose real estate? What was it like starting fresh in a whole new industry? And how did he use his past experiences to grow his current business?
“With real estate, I realized that most folks in NASCAR didn’t have an agent that was dedicated to them or that understood the industry,” he told me. “So I spent the next couple of years planning that transition.”
Josh was able to find the void in a very congested and competitive industry and make his mark by doing going back to his roots, and using was he was passionate about–NASCAR. He didn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but he did find business in his wheelhouse. But with that said, you can have all the passion in the world, but if you don’t know the right people, you may not be able to make it from good to great. For Josh, the “right people” were the gatekeepers–the business managers and accountants of the drivers. So he set about getting to know the gatekeepers and using his NASCAR knowledge to build those connections.
I always tell people, if people like you and trust you, they most likely will work with you. But, if you can bring some uniqueness to the table (in Josh’s case, extra knowledge and understanding of the people he wanted to work with) that’s a bonus, and in today’s competitive world, you need to have “a bonus” to win in business.
That’s what really inspired me about Josh. He took an industry where he had deep relationships and spun into a whole new industry, in a creative and strategic way. He stayed true to who he was, while shaping a future that would give him the life he wanted, all while building a winning team.
What life do you want? How do you need to shape your world to give it to you?
