When you’re new in any business, or even if you’ve been around a while and you just need to build your network, it’s crucial to keep your pipeline of contacts fresh. Here are some different ideas on how to make connections and find leads.
Find Your Tribe
If you’re looking to meet some new people to potentially do business with, think about ways you can find “your tribe,” or others who are similar to you. Maybe you’re in to boating. You should check out boating or fishing events. Maybe sponsor an event. Love pets? Check out the humane society. If you love the theater, try a performing arts organization. Tip: Like likes like. Try to go to the places and spaces where you would go anyway and you’ll be likely to meet people like yourself, who would want to do business with you.
Don’t be Socially Desperate
We all know people who try to leverage their social media contacts once they start a new business. And sometimes it can be annoying or even ugly and embarrassing. Don’t be that guy! Be smart about how you use your social media for business. Be funny and fun, and helpful – and not obnoxious. Show your expertise. Tip: Don’t beg people to work with you, SHOW them what you can do for them and they will WANT to work with you.
Rock Your Referrals
They say they highest compliment someone can give in business is a referral. Well, you need to ask for that referral, it’s not going to happen on its own. Ask your clients to recommend you on industry websites, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. Get their testimonials for your website. Tip: When you complete a deal or projects, give your clients options for providing referrals or recommendations. Put all of the options in an email and make it easy on them, and politely follow up.
Getting into business, where you have to make things happen instead of collecting a paycheck, can be intimidating. You’ve got to be a master networker and make leads happen! Get out there and rock it.
